Courses of Study/Pathways

Year 10, 11 & 12

Programs of Study are arranged along pathways designed to enable students to get from an entry point to an end point of their choosing.  In 2017 the College is offering 2 pathways, most commencing at Year 10 with some flexible options.

YEAR 10—AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM

The areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Health and Physical Education  are delivered as per the Australian Curriculum for year 10.

YEAR 11 & 12

PATHWAY 1—TERTIARY ENTRANCE

Students working through Pathway 1 will study courses in the class area leading to the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and at a level high enough to generate an Australian Tertiary Aggregate Rank (ATAR) which they may use to apply for university study post school. Students in Pathway 1 must sit the external state based exams at the end of Year 12 and internal College based exams each semester.

Students in Pathway 1 will also work towards nationally recognised certificates in the Farm and Trade areas. These technical qualifications will assist students to access employment, and further training in the TAFE sector.

Students in Pathway 1 will spend three days in class and two days on Farm and in Trades.  An opportunity may arise for students to select an additional course of study through SIDE.  Students in this pathway will have less time to complete Trade Certificates and may elect to work solely in Agriculture in an attempt to achieve Certificate lll.

PATHWAY 2—GENERAL

Students working through Pathway 2 will study courses in the class area leading to the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Students in Pathway 2 will use their certificates gained on farm and in the Design and Technology area as well as their WACE to access employment, traineeships, apprenticeships and further training at TAFE. Students will not generate an ATAR>.

Students in Pathway 2 will spend 2 days in class and 3 days in farm and Design and Technology

During a typical week, Year 11 and 12 students are in class for 2 or 3 days, Farm for 1 day, Trade  for 1 day and have the option of a further day in Farm or Trades as  shown in the following table.

Notes:   GENERAL Pathway students can elect more trades or more agriculture dependent on their career aspiration.

ATAR Units are much more rigorous academically and should only be chosen where an aspiration to generate an ATAR is genuine and realistic.

On application, and depending on farm resources, ATAR students may elect to drop a day of trades in favour of an extra day on farm. This is only likely to be approved for students who are in their second year at the college or those attempting Certificate III in Agriculture.
